Remote-controlled outlets: simple automation that does not need an app

Home automation has become synonymous with wifi, accounts, apps and a hub in a cupboard. For a large number of everyday problems — a lamp behind a sofa, a Christmas tree, a fan in a bedroom, an awkwardly placed extension lead — that is a great deal of machinery to switch something on.

Radio-frequency remote outlets do the same job with a transmitter and a receiver, no network and no account. They are older technology and, within their limits, still the more sensible one.

How they work

Each outlet is a receiver that plugs into a wall socket; the appliance plugs into it. A handheld remote transmits on a radio frequency — commonly 315 or 433 MHz — and the receiver switches. Range is typically quoted between 60 and 100 feet, and unlike infrared it passes through walls and does not need line of sight.

There is no configuration. Plug it in, press the button, it works, and it goes on working during an internet outage.

What they are good for

  • Lamps in awkward places. The classic use. A floor lamp behind furniture with the switch on the cable, six feet down.
  • Seasonal lighting. Tree lights, outdoor displays — anything you switch twice a day for six weeks.
  • Fans and heaters. Where a wall socket is behind a bed or under a desk.
  • Accessibility. Genuinely valuable for anyone who finds bending to a floor-level socket difficult.
  • Rented homes. No wiring, no drilling, and it all comes with you.

What they will not do

They do not schedule. There is no timer, no sunset trigger and no automation without a separate timer plug in the chain.

They do not report state. If a lamp is switched off at its own switch, the remote will not tell you — you press the button and nothing happens, and there is no way to know why from across the room.

They do not work from your phone, and they do not work from outside the house. If those matter, you want a wifi smart plug and the account that comes with it.

They also do not suit anything that must never be switched off unexpectedly. A radio signal can be blocked or interfered with, so a fridge, a freezer, a router or a medical device should be on a plain wall socket.

Choosing a set

Number of channels

Most kits are one remote to three or five outlets, with a separate button pair per outlet and often an all-on / all-off pair. Count the sockets you actually want to control and add one; expansion outlets for the same remote are usually sold separately and are not always available later.

Current rating

The critical specification, and the one people ignore. Remote outlets are commonly rated around 10 to 15 amps resistive, but many are rated far lower for motor loads. Lamps and LED strings are trivial; a fan heater is not. Read the rating and compare it against the appliance, not against the socket.

Indoor or outdoor

Outdoor units have a weather-rated housing and a sealed button. An indoor unit in a porch will work until the first heavy rain and then it will not.

Learning code versus fixed code

Learning-code units let you pair any remote to any receiver, which means a lost remote is replaceable and two kits can be merged. Fixed-code units are paired at the factory. Learning-code is worth looking for.

Two practical notes

Socket spacing. A remote outlet is a block, and on a double socket it will often cover the second outlet. Check the dimensions against your sockets, particularly on an extension lead.

Interference. Two kits on the same frequency in the same house, or a neighbour with the same brand, can occasionally cross over. Learning-code units let you re-pair; fixed-code ones do not, which is another argument for the former.

Where a smart plug is the better tool

If you want a schedule, remote access from outside the house, voice control, or energy monitoring, buy a wifi smart plug and accept the setup. Those are real capabilities that a radio remote cannot provide at any price.

If you want a lamp to come on when you press a button, a remote outlet costs less, sets up in ten seconds and will still be working in ten years without a firmware update.

No. Anything that must never be switched off unexpectedly should be on a plain wall socket. A radio signal can be blocked or interfered with, and a fridge switched off by accident is an expensive mistake.

What happens if I lose the remote?

On a learning-code kit, you pair a new remote to the receivers. On a fixed-code kit, the pairing is set at the factory and a lost remote can mean replacing the whole set — which is why learning-code is worth looking for.
