Towel warmers: wattage, mounting and whether you need a timer
A towel warmer is an unusual purchase: a small appliance that becomes part of the bathroom wall. Get it wrong and the correction involves filling holes. It is worth ten minutes of measurement first.
What it is actually for
Two things, and they pull in different directions. Warming a towel so it is pleasant to use, and drying a towel so it does not stay damp. The second is the more useful function in a bathroom without a window, because a permanently damp towel is how a bathroom starts to smell and how mildew gets a foothold.
A rail sized for drying will also warm. A rail sized only for warming will not reliably dry, and that is where most disappointment comes from.
Wattage and room size
Electric towel rails are typically between 50 and 300 watts. As a rough guide, drying two bath towels reliably wants somewhere from 120 watts upward; a small rail at 60 watts will take the chill off a hand towel and little more.
A heated rail is not a room heater. Some are marketed as though they will warm a bathroom, and in a very small, well-insulated room a 300-watt rail contributes something. In a normal bathroom it does not, and you should not buy one expecting to switch off other heating.
Hardwired or plug-in
Plug-in
Simpler, cheaper, and movable. The complication is that bathrooms have rules about where a socket may be, and in most homes the nearest legal socket is outside the room. A plug-in rail mounted on a bathroom wall with a cable running under the door is not a good outcome.
Hardwired
Neater and safer in a bathroom, and it requires an electrician and a fused spur. If the rail is going in a bathroom, budget for this rather than looking for a way around it.
Whichever you choose, check the IP rating against where it is going. Bathrooms are divided into zones by proximity to water, and the rating required is higher close to a bath or shower.
Mounting: the measurements that matter
- Height. The top bar wants to be reachable — usually between 48 and 60 inches from the floor. Higher looks tidier and is annoying to use.
- Clearance from the wall. A towel needs air on both sides to dry. Most rails specify a minimum standoff; if you mount it flush the towel dries on one face only.
- Bar spacing. Closely spaced bars look elegant and hold a folded towel badly. Wider spacing dries better.
- Wall construction. A filled rail on a plasterboard wall needs proper fixings into a stud or a suitable cavity anchor. This is the most common installation failure.
Timers and thermostats
A rail with no control runs whenever it is switched on, and people leave them on. At 150 watts, running continuously, that is a small but permanent addition to a bill.
A built-in timer — typically a two-hour boost — is genuinely useful: on before a shower, off automatically afterwards.
A thermostat holds a set temperature rather than running flat out, which is more relevant on the larger rails.
A programmable controller lets you set morning and evening periods, and for a household with a routine it is the feature that pays for itself.
If a rail has none of these, an external plug-in timer covers the same ground for a plug-in model, and a fused spur with a timer switch does it for a hardwired one.
Finish and durability
Stainless steel resists bathroom humidity best and costs the most. Chrome-plated mild steel is the common option and is fine provided the plating is not damaged — once moisture gets under chrome it lifts. Powder-coated finishes hide fingerprints and scratch.
Whatever the finish, wipe it dry occasionally. A heated rail left wet is a heated rail rusting slowly.

- Measure the wall space, including the clearance you need to hang a towel without it touching anything.
- Decide plug-in or hardwired, and if hardwired, confirm you can get a spur to that wall.
- Check the wattage against the number of towels you actually want dried.
- Confirm the IP rating suits the zone it will sit in.
- Check what fixings are supplied and whether they suit your wall.

Common questions
Will a towel rail heat my bathroom?
No. Even a 300-watt rail contributes very little to room temperature in a normal bathroom. Buy one to warm and dry towels, and keep your existing heating.
Can I plug one in inside the bathroom?
In most homes, no — bathroom socket placement is regulated. A hardwired unit on a fused spur, installed by an electrician, is the correct approach for a bathroom wall.
What wattage do I need to actually dry towels?
Reliably drying two bath towels wants roughly 120 watts upward. Rails below about 60 watts will take the chill off a hand towel and little more.
